Bernie Hoenle and his wife Marcia first fell in love with Fountain Hills as many do…by driving over the hill on Palisade Boulevard and becoming entranced! That was in 2013 and shortly after they moved to the community. Their first family Thanksgiving was on folding chairs prior to their furniture arriving from their home in Virginia.

Since then, the busy couple has set an active pace in their new hometown. Activities quickly filled the calendar including mentoring at McDowell Mountain Elementary, joining Noon Kiwanis (club president, division Lt Governor), District Kiwanis Foundation Board & working with the student Service Leadership Programs in the Fountain Hills elementary & middle schools. 

Bernie is a member of the Fountain Hills Strategic Planning Advisory Commission, been through two planning cycles and was a member of the citizen Streets Planning Committee. A Chamber of Commerce member, board member Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists (rides a road bike), plus member of the AZ Alliance for Livable Communities, Bernie works to improve networking and communications across organizations.

And finally back to performing music with the FH Community Band (past treasurer), and a previous member of the AZ Wind Symphony. Working with the Fountain Hills Unified School District he’s been a volunteer band teacher/clinician, member of the FH Protect Our Youth Coalition and started 2025 as a Governing Board Member.

Bernie is no stranger to active life. He retired from the Air Force in 1999 where his career was in Command & Control, Communications & Computers. After retirement as the Director, Chief Information Office, he began working on his second corporate career with information technology as an Account Executive for the Department of Defense that included extensive travel.

He is a graduate from the University of Arizona, with a Bachelors, Masters in Music & Education. Working his way through college was accompanied by several experiences from managing a fast food restaurant, working in an ice plant, and driving heavy construction equipment.
